Boldly Go Where YOU Haven’t Gone Before: Confessions of a Supergeek Entrepreneur

Uncategorized | 0 comments

How do I sum this up in one article? There’s a saying that’s gone around so much on the Internet, I can’t even find the true origin of it (please tell me if you know!): Let your freak flag fly!

In other words, not only be YOU but be 500% YOU. Show off the freaky, funky, funny, weird things about you. I’ll tell you why this benefits your business (and it does in a HUGE way) in a minute…

I just got back from Fan Expo where I got to see Sir Patrick Stewart and William Shatner on stage together. They are like heroes to me, especially Sir Patrick Stewart, for who he is as a person as well as his role in Star Trek The Next Generation.

My confessions – apart from actually outing myself publicly as a supergeek lol – are that you know what? I actually LIKE being a geeky, nerdy, weird oddball. I don’t want to change for anybody. Is there any part of you that likes being a trailblazer? I mean, really, I so enjoy being who I am. And who I am is not a shaman hidden up in the mountains of some far off land chanting 24/7. That’s just not me. Yes, I’m dedicated to my spirituality and expressing my gifts. And. I also am here to really really LIVE as a spiritual, strong, take-no-shit-from-anyone compassionate, playful, witty, sarcastic sci fi superfan.

What are the facets of YOU that you are NOT letting out to play?

Here’s some stuff about me you might not have known: The most exciting things to me growing up, besides the mountains full of sagebrush, were comics, sci fi and horror movies… mostly because they were the only thing other than the “ESP” books in the library that described what I was actually experiencing or extremely curious about – like seeing energy or just “knowing” things I shouldn’t know or having the recurring waking vision (and sleep paralysis) I had. Or why we’re made of exactly the same elements as the stars. Or the possibilities of quantum physics… which I only have a tiny grasp of but find so intriguing. Does any of this sound familiar to you?

So why let your freak flag fly? Why bare the parts of yourself you’re a little shy or nervous about to the world when it feels so much easier to hide it away?

Top 3 Ways Your Freaky Facets Benefit Your Business:

1. Perk up Your Platform (be SEEN). Here’s what I just did. I’ve already been posting on Facebook excitedly about my income increasing by 555% in 5 years, so that created some buzz to the tune of about 200 likes and 100 comments. So now, I just changed my Facebook profile picture to my Fan Expo selfie as Deanna Troi from Star Trek TNG, and that’s already generated 70 likes and about 25 comments in just a couple of hours. Why? Because many of you, my tribe, are also up there on the geekometer! Does Star Trek have anything to do with my business? Nope. Is it helping my business to talk about Star Trek? You bet! Why? People relate just that much more to me now. One friend commented that she keeps learning new things about me. Someone else said “I knew it!”

2. Polarize your people. Magnetize Your Tribe. The more fully you are YOU, the more you will attract people who ‘get’ you and need your services. People are drawn to you not just because of what you do but because of who you are. Every time I “out myself” in a big way (like I just did today on Facebook and in public dressing up as Deanna Troi), I will turn some people completely off and I will excite the hell out of a bunch of people. Oh no, you think, won’t you lose clients and subscriptions? Well, I won’t lose clients because I choose my clients with care. I will lose subscriptions, and I’m happy with that. Why? Well, for the few people I will have alienated, there are 3 more in my tribe who are now going to be even MORE attracted to me and my work. When you stay silent and hidden with your unique freaky qualities, people are like “oh, that’s nice”. When you stand up and just be YOU and SHARE your funny, silly, quirky moments and aspects of yourself with your tribe… the people who are meant to work with you suddenly are more excited about you and your business.

3. Freedom from Feeling Like a Fraud. The main reason people feel like a fraud is that they have parts of themselves unexpressed . When you stop hiding parts of yourself and instead play with those aspects of you and show them to the world, you literally don’t have anything to hide and you get this wonderful glow and feeling of acceptance that first comes from within and then is reflected back to you. It’s really quite amazing and I highly recommend doing everything you can to get past whatever stops you from being 500% YOU. This is really about freedom of expression, which most of us believe we have, but we aren’t using it! There’s a magic that happens from being fully YOU.

There must’ve been 100,000 people at this expo – it is by far the BIGGEST event of any kind I have ever experienced. You know what this means? HUGE AHA for me and maybe for you too. Nerds, Geeks, SF fans, trekkies, comic superfans, horror fans… make up a MASSIVE piece of the population!!! The Hay House Conference in Toronto, for example, draws about 5,000 people – nothing to sneeze at, but SUPER TINY in comparison to Fan Expo. That just shows you how many people are living NOT-mainstream lives!! Another bonus benefit: you get yourself to events where your tribe is not only hanging out but COMING OUT, and you’ll see you’re truly far from alone. 😀

The more you let yourself out, the more clear your tribe becomes and the brighter your light can shine to attract them.

Please post your ideas below if you’re reading or listening to this on my blog. I always love hearing from you! 🙂
